How Beer Is Killing You: Fight Drug And Alcohol Abuse

HARARE - Beer is an alcoholic beverage believed to be the oldest fermented drink, made by blending cereal grains like barley with water and then fermenting the mixture with the brewer’s yeast.

The fluid is also infused with hops to give it its characteristic bitter taste – a third most widely consumed drink after water and tea, beer has its ill effects on health – so avoidance may be wise.

Effects of beer
When beer is consumed, the alcohol is absorbed directly into the blood stream through the stomach, the small intestines and circulates to all parts of the body quickly via the blood stream.

When it reaches the brain it affects behaviour. It can make some people lively and chatty and others silent and moody.

Alcohol also affects your physical coordination, reaction times and decision making capabilities. People who drink excessively are more likely to take unnecessary risks, become more aggressive or uncoordinated.

How fast you drink and if there is food in your stomach affect the rate of absorption of alcohol. Eating a snack or meal with your beer will slow down absorption of alcohol into the blood stream. Drinking beer slowly and or alternating beer with a soft drink or water will have a similar effect.

Beer risks
As blood passes through the liver the alcohol is gradually broken down and eliminated from the body. Drinking too much alcohol over a prolonged time can raise blood pressure.

Heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver disease, strokes and cancers of the mouth and throat. Dependence on alcohol can lead to depression and more serious mental illness.

Alcohol consumption has long been linked to weight gain like the ‘beer belly’. A typical bottle of beer has anywhere from 120 calories to 150 calories.

Because it is relatively cheaper than its other alcohol counterparts like wine, it’s essentially easy to overdo consumption.

And so all those pizza, chips, and chicken wings one eats while downing beers all contribute to the caloric overload. Alcohol breakdown takes priority over fat burning as well.

This means frequent beer drinking coupled with heavy caloric intake from food can result in the fat to remain unmetabolised and therefore stored in the body as added mass.

Beer and mosquitoes
Consumption of the beverage is associated with irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain and dyspepsia. Experts believe that alcohol use and anxiety disorder can trigger conditions like depression or social anxiety disorder.

Nursing women are advised against intake, as alcohol is transferred to the milk and will then be consumed by the infant.
Clear Beer is Becoming Expensive
Disturbed sleep and impaired gross motor development are the known side effects of infant alcohol ingestion from breast milk.

Alcohol ingestion has been found to attract mosquitoes and so beer drinkers have an increased risk for bites and subsequently exposure to diseases such as malaria.

Excessive consumption also results in a variety of liver diseases such as alcoholic hepatitis or inflammation, and cirrhosis or scarring of the liver tissues.

It is the single most significant contributory factor for the cases of liver diseases, oral cancer, gastric cancer, and breast cancer. – Online Sources
