Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure and is still in with a chance of being named CAF African Footballer of the Year for an unprecedented fifth time after his inclusion on the final three-man shortlist for the prestigious award.

Swansea City star Andre Ayew and Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are the other two finalists for the prize which recognises African football's best player of the calendar year.

All three players were originally named on a 37-man long-list in October. That list was trimmed to just 10 individuals in November. Stars like Yacine Brahimi of Porto, Southampton's Sadio Mane and Roma winger Mohamed Salah missed the final cut.

Toure was recently named 2015 BBC African Footballer of the Year and will discover if he has made history when the winner of the CAF award is announced on 7th January.

The 32-year-old Ivorian has won the award every year since Samuel Eto'o won his fourth title back in 2010. During that time, Toure has helped transform Manchester City into one of the strongest teams in Europe and remains vital to the sky blues even now, despite his ageing legs.

Ayew made a very good start to life in the Premier League when he joined Swansea from Marseille on a free transfer in the summer.

The Ghanaian, who is the son of 1992 African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele, has scored six times already in the English top flight following on from a strong final few months in France during the first half of the calendar year.

Aubameyang has had a spectacular few months in Germany. The Gabon international enjoyed a productive campaign in front of goal last season but has already eclipsed his tally of 25 strikes in all competitions before the halfway mark in 2015/16.
