Johannesburg - South African teenage wonder kid, Junior Mkhombo's dream of becoming a doctor one day came into sharp focus on Friday when he was admitted, at the age of 15, to medical school.

Junior told Daily Sun he felt intimidated by the older students but emphasised that he was not there by mistake.

“Due to my good grades in high school I was promoted from grade 4 to 5 and then from grade 8 to 9, so I was in grade 12 at the age of 14,” said the young man from Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge.

“I got distinctions in maths, physics, economics, life science and life orientation.”
Student Grants Have Been Availed In South Africa

Junior is one of 60 students who were welcomed as the first class of the University of Limpopo’s new medical school. The medical school is the first in the country after 1994 and it comes after the merger of the University of Limpopo with Medunsa.

“It is actually frightening to be doing my first year at university at my age because other people speak to me as if I’m inferior to them but I will get used to it,” he said.

Limpopo health MEC Phophi Ramathuba said the department was funding the students because they believed that when they graduate they would help reduce the shortage of doctors in the province.

Vice-chancellor at the university, Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, said the enrolment was expected to increase from 60 to 80 next year. - Daily Sun
