Over 30 000 people from different parts of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa gathered at Kings Park Stadium yesterday to pray for peace and unity.

Kings Park Stadium was a sea of ANC T-shirts and church uniforms during the national prayer day yesterday.

The Zion, Nazareth and Chibini church uniforms added colour to Durban Stadium while representatives of Hinduism, Rastafarianism and Islam also attended the event.

Over 30 000 people from different parts of KZN gathered at the stadium to pray for peace and unity during the upcoming local government elections, and for an end to the drought in the province.

President Jacob Zuma said the prayer was important as the country was heading for disaster. He said judging from the latest incidents of violence currently sweeping the country, he could see that peace was now shifting away from people in certain organisations and institutions.

“We have seen violence in parliament recently, we’ve seen many schools being burnt in Vuwani and we’ve also seen chaos in our universities. We condemn all these incidents that tarnish the image of our country,” said Zuma.

Bishop Mantoa Matsoso of the African Independent Churches said with all the bloodshed and chaos in the country, it was time to call for divine intervention.

KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu did not attend the prayers. His spokesman Ndabe Sibiya said: “The premier had another commitment and asked Willies Mchunu to attend on his behalf.”

Reports on Friday suggest that Mchunu and other cabinet members were asked to resign at the beginning of this week. - Daily Sun
