Each phone comes with a number that makes it easy to locate a stolen device yourself - writing down your new cellphone’s EMEI number and keeping it in a safe place is an often-neglected precaution that could help recover your phone after it has been stolen.
Each phone carries a unique IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity number) which can be used to track it anywhere in the world.![]() |
How to Tack Your Stolen Phone |
This allows you to discover the phone’s location without having to go to a police station.
This is how it works, according to a guideline by George Herald:
1. Dial *#06# from your mobile.
2. Your mobile phone shows a unique 15-digit number.
3. Note down this number at a secure place except in your mobile phone itself as this is the number which will help trace your phone in case of theft.
4. Once stolen, just email this 15-digit IMEI number to cop@vsnl.net with details as stated below: Your name, address, phone model, make, last used number, e-mail for communication, the date it went missing and the IMEI number.
5. Your mobile will be traced within the next 24 hours via a complex system of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Internet. You will find where your handset is being operated and the new user’s number will be sent to your e-mail.
6. After this, you can inform the police with the details you have.
According to Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, if the victim of a theft reports the stolen device and provides police with details of its location, they will act on that information and investigate. - Online Sources
