Two initiates died in the OR Tambo district municipality as the season begins, the ministry for co-operative governance and traditional affairs has confirmed.
This takes the death toll so far this season to five.
Two initiates, one a 19-year-old man from Enyandeni, died as a result of dehydration, whilst the second one died at the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality as a result of intestinal obstruction.
The other three initiates died earlier this week in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. The ministry said the initiates died while attending an illegal initiation school.
"It saddens me that this death happened, even though we have put in place key issues that should be followed by parents before the young men embark on the initiation process.

"It saddens me that this death happened, even though we have put in place key issues that should be followed by parents before the young men embark on the initiation process.
This includes pre-screening of young men before embarking on the initiation process, ensuring that initiation schools are properly registered, including the surgeons, and ensuring that they drink water to avoid dehydration," Deputy Minister Obed Bapela said in a statement.
He added that it was unacceptable that initiates should still die when government had put mechanisms in place to address these issues. - Daily Sun
