Authority Check: Zim War Vet Leader Charged by Police

Incarcerated Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Douglas Mahiya has been charged with undermining authority of - and or insulting President Robert Mugabe.

His counterpart Victor Matemadanda is also in police custody.

The duo are being charged for contravention of Section 33 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

It is alleged Mahiya was picked by army detail from his home just outside Harare. 
Police have Arrested War Veterans Leaders 

Police officers claimed that Mahiya, who was arrested on Wednesday 27 July 2016 and detained at Matapi Police Station in Harare’s Mbare high-density suburb.

Their charge arises from a hard hitting press statement released by the organisation castigated the President and his rule. 

According Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), "... the police charged, has contents that insults, undermine the authority of the president or are likely to engender feelings of hatred, contempt, or ridicule of the president whether in his person or in respect of the president's office."

ZLHR say that since 2010, it has assisted over 150 people, who would have been arrested and charged with contravening Section 33 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

Prominent people harassed under the same law include Morgan Tsvangirai, Acie Lumumba among other political activists.
