A junior policeman here reportedly hired a prostitute for a one-night-stand and gave her his service uniform as surety after failing to raise her $20 charge.

Constable Givemore Marara (30) then made a false report that the uniform had been stolen.

Cst Marara, who is based at Chikato Police Station, has since been summoned to appear before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court facing charges of providing false information to a public officer.

Marara allegedly made a false report that his uniform comprising a pair of boots, belt, shirt, trousers, jersey and cap had been stolen yet he had given the uniform to a suspected commercial se_x worker, Mary Gavaza.

He was due for his initial court appearance yesterday, but the matter was postponed to August 31 after one of the key state witnesses failed to turn up.

Marara, who is represented by Mr Collin Maboke of Ruvengo, Maboke and Partners, claims he never surrendered his uniform to Gavaza. He insists the police boots and belt were stolen after he left them outside his house.

He further claims that he only discovered that his police cap, shirt, trousers, and jersey were also missing when he was doing reconciliation after the theft of his boots and belt.

Allegations against Marara are that on June 21 this year he hired a lady of the night at a night club on the pretext that he would pay her $20 after spending the night at her place in Runyararo West.

After spending the night with Gavaza, Marara allegedly failed to meet his end of the bargain and offered his police uniform as surety.

Marara did not have another set of uniforms to report for work and decided to lie that his uniform had been stolen.

Police investigations revealed that Marara had made a false report and a search at Gavaza’s house led to the recovery of the uniform. Gavaza told the investigating officers that Marara pledged the uniform as surety. - The Herald
