Forbidden Fruit: ‘Men of Cloth on Deflowering, Lust Crusade’

Harare – There seems to be a thin line between good and evil as perceived ‘servants of God’ are plunging into lust pitfalls – with alleged sexual assault cases on the rise.

Hardly a week lapses without a headline linking men of cloth indulging in s.ex disgraces – but they are human after all – and they are deemed to fall into sin.

The newest subject is magnetic foreteller, Prophet Walter Magaya, the founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD).

Probably the godfather of abuse under the cover of the church, the late Godfrey Pegnick Nzira was a demi-god within his religious confines that commandeered respect even within the political landscape.

Rumours postulate that after his release from prison on medical grounds, he held a celebration attended by prominent political figures. His links to the ruling party are documented.

Nzira’s overtones came to an ultimate halt in 2003 after seven women came forward to report rape cases against the self-ordained divine healer.

On his judgment, 2,000 faithful supports unleashed an orgy of violence targeting police officers plus court officials.

He was later pardoned after serving only eight years on medical grounds. Prominent lawyer Jonathan Samkange commented that any prisoner who had a justifiable reason to be freed could petition the president.

Nine months after gaining freedom, he died. A sad chapter was closed off by a man who was uncompromising in his support for the ruling party. Here was a man trusted spiritually and he abused it for his s.exual gratification.
Gumbura's Wives Leaves the Magistrate Courts in Harare
The late Nzira was deaf and dumb at birth – he was later delivered. He later established his own Julani Firi Santa Shrine in Chitungiwza. And it is here that most of the cases occurred.

Exiled founder of Girl Child Network and gender activist, Betty Makoni was instrumental in his eventual incarceration – though he maintained he was innocent – claiming his enemies were after him.

Robert Martin Gumbura, currently serving a punitive jail term for a myriad of sexual excesses was untouchable during his twilight.

The founder of RMG End Time Message, sired in 1956, was accused of abusing his congregates for more than three decades. He had ordained himself with authority to engage in se.xual intercourse with any member of his choice – and could loan them to their husbands.

To his die-hard admirers, he could 'communicate with God' – and he was regarded as an earthly idol – which possessed extraordinary powers – while his church composed songs to praise him.

Out of the many women he slept with, he used protection sparingly – while his influence spread globally – even in the UK.

During food riots at Chikurubi maximum prison in 2015 – his home for the next four decades, Gumbura was singled as the ring leader. In prison, he was served special food – he had his secretary among other benefits.

His 10 legally married wives have vowed to stand by his side – till death parts them. During his short trial, Prophet Magaya, a known philanthropist has maintained that his name is being dragged in the mud because he ticked political idols.

Before the trial, he had amassed stretches of virgin land to construct thousands of homes for the homeless. The land dispute has dragged Saviour Kasukuwere – Zanu-PF Commissar and Local Government Minister.

His alleged rape case only came into the public domain after a year of hibernation. However, his stringent bail conditions have since been relaxed. It took the courage of a paternal grandparent to drag the once powerful politician behind bars – but all along, the courts found no reason to incarcerate him.

In 2010 – he had rapped a minor by pulling a gun and threatening to shoot her. Kereke swam into the political game when he was chosen Bikita West Member of Parliament (MP) in Masvingo in 2007.

After a short-lived expulsion, he reentered mainstream politics – and he was eventually sentenced to 10 years after a prolonged battle. “This is a case of factional politics. Even though he was guilty, Zanu-PF protected and used him – but now he is paying dearly for crossing the line,” a political observer noted.

For the victimised – it was goodbye to bad rubbish – but the political question remains. Interestingly, the mentioned personalities had a political connotation attached to their respective cases.

When Nzira was freed from detention, it is romoured there were all-night festivities for his freedom attended by heavy-duty politicians – while alcohol flowed freely – while women were generously offered.

The late sect leader was instrumental in recruiting voters to the ruling party – albeit indictments of coercion. Politicians are on record of being the central actors in hounding servants of God in seeking their agendas – and fighting for a political voice and waning power.

Magaya alone commands a following of more than 100,000 – while many office-bearers struggle to appeal to a handful of listeners – even with the aid of strongarming.

In the spiritual realm, water spirits have been noted to tempt servants of God to fall into sin – this can be achieved by ladies dressing seductively in revealing clothing – and lustful speech.
