Mixed Fortunes: Jah Prayzah ‘Knocks Accusations’, Wins MTV Award’

Harare – Recently, Jah Prayzah was headline news for his ‘bedroom exploits’ after his former group member, Gonyeti – accused him of s.ex romps and alleged abuses – but all this did not dim his talents as he won the Listeners’ Choice award at the MTV Africa Awards (MAMAS) in Johannesburg.

The duo seems to have mended their differences – and is reportedly combining forces, again in the music business.

Jah Prayzah claimed he was STI-immune according to the victim, also double as a circumcision brand ambassador.

“To me the nomination was enough and I was not even dreaming of winning the award. Truly speaking it came as a surprise but I am very happy and I feel honoured,” Jah Prayzah told H-Metro.

“I was informed of the news while on stage and it became a celebratory performance. I want to thank my fans and all stakeholders for the support. This is a message out there that we can make it as Zimbabweans,” he added.

The winner was absent from the awards – raising the ire of his followers.

“Not that we were not confident, winning or not we could have attended because we were nominated. The issue is the last batch of the nominees was informed late and we had already organised events on the weekend of the awards.

The MTV Africa Music Awards (also known as the MAMAs) were established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa (now Viacom International Media Networks Africa) to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa.

The MTV Africa Music Awards was conceived and created by the SVP and MD of the MTV Networks in Africa, Alex Okosi. Earlier, African artists had been included in the MTV Europe Music Award where MTV Base Africa viewers voted for Best African artist in the 2006 and 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The first awards show was held at the Velodrome, Abuja in Nigeria on 22 November 2008 and was broadcast around the world on November 29 in conjunction with Airtel and local television channels in Africa.

The show was hosted by Trevor Nelson. The awards were preceded by four concerts celebrating the musicians nominated for the awards.

There were concerts featuring international and local nominees, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on November 5 and Nairobi, Kenya.

The Award categories included Artist of the Year, Best Alternative, Best Female, Best Group, Best Hip-Hop, Best Live Performance, Best Male, Best New Act, Best R&B, Video of the Year and the MY Video Award which allows viewers to make their own version of a music video. - Online Sources
