Johannesburg – Maboneng is sited on Johannesburg’s periphery.

The serene, unsoiled atmosphere is a sharp contrast to its vicious surroundings. Crowds of elite dinners frequent the area in pursuit of an aura of relaxation – and it does not disappoint. Crime is arrested here.

Glimpses of mixed nationals reignite the rainbow nation ideals.

Maboneng brags as a cultural epicenter, attracting cosmopolitan visitors, offering shops, entertainment venues, residential spaces, offering the best eateries, and housing The Bioscope – the only independent cinema in South Africa.

With a vision to evolve the zone, create space for all – Maboneng is a sign of hope for South Africa to reclaim its former glory. Rivertown, Maboneng partner precinct in Durban is pursuing inner city integration.

Hilbrow – a Johannesburg inner city neighbourhood is dreaded for its high population density, unemployment, poverty and crime.
Hillbrow in Johannesburg
Once preserved as a ‘whites only’ during the 1970s, it soon became a hub for different ethnicities. And rubbish soon took away the beauty as crime became dominant.

Today, former township dwellers dominate the area. Like in Maboneng, art is also part of Hilbrow'.

Media has used Hilbrow to depict the harsh realities of South Africa including: Hilbrow Kids and The Restless Supermarket among other blockbusters.

Since 1990, shelter groups have been retrieving and rehabilitating female child victims of commercial sexual exploitation.

A towering telecommunications tower – The Hillbrow Tower, completed in 1971, dominates the Johannesburg city skyline, featuring on various images nationwide – it rises to a height of 270 metres.

Before, it once featured a rotating restaurant, closed 1981 due to security fears – and is unlikely to be reopened.

Ponte City – the tallest residential building in Johannesburg was completed in 1975. Housing 54 floors, it was once a sought-after residence – but it has been rundown, over-populated and generally unsafe.

Recent upgrades have brought the long-gone shine.
