Harare – He is 39. She is 64. In this part of Africa, marrying an older wife is an ‘abomination’.

Far off in France, that culture is being heavily contested. The marriage of French Presidential hopeful Emmanuel Macron (39) and his wife Brigitte Trogneux (64) could tilt the tittle of first lady.
At 16, Macron vowed to marry her former high school drama teacher – 25 years her senior – a mother of three then. His family tried in vain to thwart the love affair. The father ordered Brigitte to stay away from his son until he turned 18 – obvious she did not listen.
French tabloids and magazines are on steroids over the story, however the couple have hit back hard at critics.
To inflict more injury, the couple has been photographed kissing and embracing during the campaigns.
According to the Mirror, Macron said his wife would play a major role as France’s first lady if elected. He quit the Socialist Party to run for president and founded the party En Marche! in April last year.
The May-December romance blossomed as Trogneux taught Macron when he was a 15-year-old student at a Jesuit college in Amiens.
Last year she told a documentary that: “I didn’t think it would go very far. I thought he would get bored. We wrote, and little by little I was totally overcome by the intelligence of this boy.”
She added: “Bit by bit, he defeated all my resistance, in an amazing way, with patience.” The couple married in 2007.
The presidential hopeful, who will become France’s youngest president ever attacked his detractors.
“Nobody would call it unusual if the age difference was reversed. People find it difficult to accept something that is sincere and unique.”
History is awash with men attracted to older women.
