Harare – While the Zimbabwe government was availing the Anti-Domestic Violence Council to curb escalating violence against women, a government minister was being arraigned before the courts by his wife, consequently ending their four-year vicious marriage.
Faced with escalating domestic violence, the state elected to launch the council comprising chiefs, state official and civic society leaders, to effectively monitor and implement the Domestic Violence Act.Violence against women remains a problem, with one in three women having experienced violence since the age of 15 years.

Melody Marapira, wife to the deputy minister of agriculture Davis, has chosen to end their marriage, arguing the union had irretrievably broken. The husband withdrew opposing papers filed earlier, allowing the divorce to proceed.
“I have no intention whatsoever to defend the action of divorce and ancillary relief sought. In the premises, I consent to the plaintiff’s action being immediately set down for hearing on an uncontested basis. I hereby waive the necessity to be served personally with a notice of set down,” reads part of his affidavit.
Mavis married Davis in 2013 in Masvingo under the Marriages Act (Chapter 5:11). The couple has three minor children – however, she accused the minister of being a serial womaniser.
“The defendant has been having numerous affairs with other women. Parties want to lead separate lives. The defendant has been abusive to plaintiff physically and mentally,” part of the declaration stated.
The feuding parties have been living separately for a while, after losing affection and love for each other.
Mavis is seeking a decree of divorce, custody of children, control of property, including $500 monthly maintenance per child. The minister must also pay school fees and accommodation for the three minors.
While together, the couple acquired an immovable property in Harare and a farm in Masvingo. They collectively own, 200 cattle herd, 1 000 sheep and 65 hectares of land under perennial pivot irrigation. – The Herald/www.tinzwei.com
