Harare – Sometimes referred as orphan diseases, 7 000 rare illnesses and disorders affect 300 million people globally.

In Zimbabwe, So we Care Foundation initiated a programme to assist underprivileged people with such conditions.

Derick Matsengarwodzi
The organisation says: “We are Zimbabweans driven by a passion to save underprivileged and vulnerable citizens. Our mission is to use our God given resources to bring social and developmental change to Zimbabwe.”
Rare Diseases Affect Millions Worldwide

Donate a dollar campaign by the foundation saved the life of Obey Andrea, a toddler from Wedza born with a rare eye condition.

“It's very easy to profess and feel love. But the fruits only come when we can impact people's lives. Let us join together and impact the life of others. Partner with us with just a dollar and transform lives. Together we can join smaller particles and build a strong foundation for the nation Zimbabwe,” pleaded the foundation.

Obey’s operation was delayed due to lack of funding, until So We Care Foundation came in. His parents acknowledged the noble cause for assisting their son, and said it needed national support.

“We can solve our own problems. We can help ourselves,” said Mandy Denda, So We Care Foundation coordinator.

What is a rare disease?
A rare disease is any disease that affects a small percentage of the population. Most rare diseases are genetic, and thus are present throughout the person's entire life, even if symptoms do not immediately appear.

Many rare diseases appear early in life, and about 30 percent of children with rare diseases will die before reaching their fifth birthday. With a single diagnosed patient only, ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency is considered the rarest genetic disease.

There are three movement disorders that start at the same time with schizophrenia and they are as rare as ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency disease. No single cutoff number has been agreed upon for which a disease is considered rare.

A disease may be considered rare in one part of the world, or in a particular group of people, but still be common in another.

Global Genes have estimated that more than 300 million people worldwide are living with one of the 7 000 diseases they define as "rare" in the United States. – Additional Reporting from Online Sources
