Harare – Months after appointing Mugabe’s son in-law Simba Chikore to the supreme post at ailing airliner Air Zimbabwe, Bona Mugabe-Chikore has been roped into the Censorship Board.
The board announced in Harare by the minister of Home Affairs Ignatius Chombo, will be chaired by former education minister and historian Aeneas Chigwedere.Derick Matsengarwodzi
With the influence of social media ahead of the 2018 general elections, analysts view the move as an attempt to gag the prominent platforms.
Arts activist Silvanos Mudzvova said this was being done to make sure artistic products are ‘silenced’.

“They will never approve any work critical of or against the government, ruling party Zanu PF or the First Family. And Bona will never approve any theatrical scripts or material that critic her father,” said Mudzvova to New Zimbabwe.
Bulawayo-based theatre guru Raisedon Baya was equally pessimistic.
“Obviously now anything negative about Mugabe or the ZRP will not be able to see light at the end of the day,” he said.
Chombo said the board must ensure freedoms.
“The Constitution has a provision for the freedom of artistic expression, cultural beliefs and association and the same Constitution empowers the board of censors to ensure that these freedoms do not infringe on other people’s rights,” Chombo said.
Abuse of social media will be targeted, according to the minister.
“The board must brace themselves for a challenging term in office in this era of increased internet and social media. There is lot of work for you and the government is willing to fund the board operations to ensure that you carry your mandate responsibly,” said the minister.
Other members of the board include: Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, Bulawayo Metropolitan provincial administrator Konzani Ncube, Catholic priest Father Fidelis Mukonori and Shingai Rukwata Ndoro
The new board will serve for the next five years and is composed of members from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, church organisations, traditional leaders, lawyers and accountants.
