African Union candidate Zimbabwean Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Dr Walter Mzembi has lost to a Georgia candidate for the UNWTO Secretary General post in Madrid, Spain this afternoon.

Dr Mzembi lost in the second round of votes. He came second in the elections, garnering 15 votes, while the winner got 18 votes.

Georgia 18 and Zimbabwe (Mzembi) 15

Africa had urged closer to victory having passed the first round with Dr Mzembi garnering 11 out of 33 votes followed by Georgia which had 8 votes.

First round results:
Zimbabwe (Mzembi) 11

Georgia 8

South Korea 7

Brazil 4

Colombia 3

The elections were meant to replace the outgoing UNWTO Secretary General Dr Tarib Rifai of Jordan. - ZBC
