Pitso Mosimane: Sundowns Paying the Price for Lack of Off-seasons

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane feels his side are starting to pay the price for consecutive seasons without a break following their CAF Champions League loss to Esperance De Tunis.

Sundowns are currently in the grips of an injury crisis, with young defender Modjeka Madisha the latest to enter the infirmary after being substituted just before half-time on Friday.

He was replaced by Ivory Coast defender Soumahoro Bangaly, who conceded a 90th-minute penalty which saw Esperance clinch a 2-1 win.

This means Esperance are leading the group with seven points, followed by St George with five while Sundowns are a further point adrift.

Vita Club, who Sundowns claimed their only Group C win against so far, are yet to collect a single point in their three matches, with the 2010 champions having lost all three encounters.

CAF Coach of the Year Mosimane says the little break his team have had over the past two years is now catching up with them, with Wayne Arendse, Ricardo Nascimento and inspirational captain Hlompho Kekana all out injured.

Yannick Zakri missed the loss through suspension after earning the second booking in Kinshasa against Vita.

“It is a little bit difficult and unfortunate that we can't put a full strength team to play. I think you could see I can play Thapelo Morena as the striker and that is the best I can do because if you look at the bench, there's nobody who can play and all the defenders and we don't even make 18 players on the bench,” lamented Mosimane.

“But it’s okay. We'll have enough time [until the next match away to Esperance on June 21] and hopefully we can get at least one [injured player] back and if we can get at least one attacker back it'll be better.

“You only wish you can have your [best] team to play and this team [Esperance] we can beat, we can beat this team. Even in Tunisia, we can beat this team, I believe so.” Sundowns will, for sure, have Zakri available for selection as he has finished serving his ban. - Kickoff
