ANC Teaser: "We are not EFF," says Ian Khama

President Ian Khama has set the party’s 37th congress on stitches as he teased the delegation from South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) not to be intimidated by his party’s black, red and white colours by mistaking it to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

“When you see people attired predominantly in the red colour, don’t run away, we are not the EFF. As the BDP, we are well behaved we are not like the EFF,” he said to a round of infectious laughter.

He encouraged the ANC delegation to relax and feel free. Khama’s light-hearted address was preceded by a moment of silence observed in honour of the recently departed former president Sir Ketumile Masire.

Khama warned members of his party against complacency indicating that it will take hard work for them to turn around the fortunes of the party, which has been encountering a fall in its fortunes.

He said the BDP government undoubtedly continues to deliver its promises to Batswana and has indicated that it takes collective effort to turn things around.

He further warned the party not to make a mistake by ushering in the opposition, which he said was a risk as they could misrule the country.

He said the BDP has life even post his presidency, which ends next year. He vowed to remain with the party when his term of office comes to an end.

The 37th congress has attracted party diehards from the 57 constituencies, which has literally coloured vast piece of land where the congress is held within the TCE property, literally red, black and white.

The hostile cold weather and dust in the area have not prevented party diehards from turning to the official opening in their thousands. At the end, the delegates are expected to elect a new leadership. - Mmegi Online
