Harare – Zimbabwe media has been plunged into mourning once again after the death of three media personnel in less than a month – the latest being veteran broadcaster Dave Emberton.
Emberton aged 69 died in Durban, South Africa at his son’s home due to heart failure on June 30, according to fellow scribe Angus Shaw.Derick Matsengarwodzi
Starting as a floor manager in Bulawayo, Emberton rose to become a news anchor at Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC).
Another former ZBC staffer, Christina Taruvinga died in UK recently after a long battle with breast cancer. Daily News staff Sharon Muguwu also succumbed to leukemia in June.
The late Emberton was reportedly suffering from mental breakdown believed to be dementia, and was reportedly nabbed for ‘shoplifting’ by a Harare supermarket.
“He almost lost his arm because he had defaulted on his diabetes medication. Now he does not want to go to the United Kingdom without me. The last time he was there the sister made it clear she could not take care of him and kept sending me messages to send him money so that he could come back home,” his wife Melody Kumora once said.
The retailer later apologised for arresting the former news reader.
“There was an incident in one of our stores with Dave Emberton. We acknowledge as Spar that we could have handled the incident differently. From the Spar side we have apologised for the way things were handled and we hope this can go a long way,” said the shop manager
Emberton was also an actor is survived by his son Dave Junior, and two grandkids. Burial arrangements are still sketchy.
