Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school? This is the debate currently raging in Jamaica after a recent incident in which a teacher allegedly pulled his licensed gun and confronted hostile students at a high school in Trelawny, in the north west of the island.

According to Jamaican newspaper, The Gleaner, the issue will be thrashed out at an education conference in August.

The Jamaican Teachers’ Association (JTA) is strongly supporting the right of teachers to protect themselves in the work place.
Teachers Demand Guns

JTA’s president-elect, Garth Anderson is quoted as saying: "When a person is issued with a firearm licence, he is told that the firearm must be on his person or locked away safely at home. The school is like any other workplace, where there is need for protection of life and property."

Anderson said that the code around firearms at schools currently being used was written in 1980 and is outdated.

“The school environment today is very different from those days. Sometimes it gets hostile, making protection of life and property necessary. Based on what is happening in schools today, teachers might well be feeling the need to protect life and property," he said.

The country’s Ministry of Education is proposing that firearms may be carried to school by teachers, but they must be concealed and may not be used “to intimidate” students or staff.

In the US, where bloody massacres repeatedly haunt its schools, 18 states permit teachers to carry concealed weapons to work. - Daily Sun
