Jonathan Philippe: Can Argentine Striker End Amakhosi Goal Drought?

Following the success of Colombian, Leonardo Castro at Mamelodi Sundowns, the trend for PSL to shift their attention to South American strikers is slowly gathering momentum.

And now Amakhosi have joined the bandwagon, with Argentinian striker, Jonatan Philippe, under their radar and is believed to have touched down in South Africa and is due to be assessed by Kaizer Chiefs.

In the last two seasons, Chiefs have signed Ryan Moon, Lewis Macha, Michelle Katsvairo, Gustavo Paez, Emmanuel Letlotlo, Camaldine Abraw, Edward Manqele and Bongani Ndulula.

Veteran Bernard Parker was already at the club and they had let go of Katlego Mphela, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Kingston Nkhatha a year before that.

The 29-year-old Philippe, who was playing for Agrotikos Asteras in the Greek Second Division last season, landed in South Africa this week. And media reports reveal that he is expected to join up with the Amakhosi next week as he looks to impress Steve Komphela.

Philippe is a former Boca Juniors forward who can play as a striker or on the right wing and has plied his trade in Greece, El Salvador, Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay in recent years.

The forward scored nine goals for Agrotikos last season - including a hat-trick last month - and Komphela will be hoping that he can provide the goalscoring threat that the club seemed to lack last season.

Goal.com Argentine football expert German Esmerado who's watched him in their league says: "Philippe didn't play a lot in the first team of Boca Juniors, but he did play in the Academy and he did very well there."

"Before that he was a young promising player in Huracan, where he became the top scorer of the youngest divisions in the Academy," said Esmerado. - Online Sources
