Josta Dladla: 'Give Coach Steve Komphela a Chance'

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Josta Dladla says Steve Komphela's efforts so far at Amakhosi warrant an extended stay for the coach.

The Glamour Boys are yet to claim silverware under the tutelage of the 50-year-old coach.

However, Dladla says he saw evidence of Chiefs coming right under Komphela last season and urges the current crop of players to start pulling their weight.

“It takes time for them [players] to understand what the coach wants, but you can see that in the second season he [Komphela] was much better,” Dladla said.

“So, I mean if he keeps the same players they’ll know what the coach wants and when he goes for the [new] players he will know where he lacks [when signing]. So, I think next season [2017/18 season] it’s going to be much better for him.

“It’s about time to give South African coaches, ex-players a chance. Look at how [Super Sport United coach] Eric Tinkler is doing. Benni McCarthy [new Cape Town City coach] is now coming into the picture. Komphela as well, give him a chance. Why not?

“It’s about time to let our South African ex-players be part of South African football."

Komphela was born on 1 July 1967, is the former manager of Maritzburg United, and current coach of Kaizer Chiefs. He started out at NSL Second Division side Klerksdorp City and later Qwa Qwa Stars which he earned promotion to the National Soccer League with.

He made his NSL debut on 9 February 1986 in a 4--1 win over Witbank Aces. In 1992, Komphela helped his team to a third-place finish in the league and was voted the NSL Players' Player of the Year.

He later joined Kaizer Chiefs where he played all 34 league games and signed a contract overseas on 16 August 1993 moving to Gaziantepspor for the second half of 1993/94 season alongside fellow South African Tebogo Moloi.

He retired in 1997. - Online Sources
