Infanticide Student: Scholar Bust with Dead Baby in Bag

A student at Walter Sisulu University is under police guard in hospital after she was bust throwing away a bin bag with a dead baby in it.

On Friday the campus in Mthatha was abuzz as curious students gathered at the woman’s residence and took cellphone photos of forensic officers carrying away the dead baby.

The suspect was caught carrying the bag by her roommates, who phoned the police. University spokeswoman Yonela Thukwayo said: “The issue is currently with the police so at this stage we can’t share more information.”

It wasn’t yet clear if the baby was stillborn or was killed.
Baby in a Bin Bag

It is not the first incident of this nature at the university. Last week a baby’s body was found by a security guard at Ibika Campus in Butterworth, after he spotted a dog pulling a plastic bag from a bin.

A case of concealment of birth was opened by the cops, who are still looking for the mum. Thukwayo said: “The only difference between the two cases is that a suspect was arrested in Mthatha.

“Cops in Ibika are still trying to match the baby’s DNA to a female student.” She said students were not taking their reproductive health seriously.

“What’s saddening is that we have clinics on all our campuses with nurses and psychologists readily available.”

Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the student was in hospital after suffering from medical complications.

“She is currently under police guard. Once she recovers, she will be formally charged with concealment of birth.” - Daily Sun
