Steve Komphela: Why Kaizer Chiefs Always Sign Bench Warmers

Johannesburg - It is strange that when Kaizer Chiefs sign players, hardly any of them are good enough to get ahead of the likes of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Mulomowandau Mathoho, Bernard Parker and Tsepo Masilela in the starting line-up.

Steve Komphela is in his third season with the club and hardly any of the players Chiefs have signed since his arrival have been able to feature regularly in the starting line-up.

Contrary, Pitso Mosimane told the media that he signs players who should be able to get into the starting line-up at Mamelodi Sundowns.

He signed Oupa Manyisa and George Lebese and, not long after their arrival, he gave both of them starts in the Tshwane derby against SuperSport United on Saturday.
Steve Komphele Under Pressure to Prove his Abilities

And even though Razak Brimah was on the bench on Saturday, the Ghanaian number one goalkeeper is more than capable of taking Denis Onyango’s spot in the starting line-up.

Same goes for Orlando Pirates.

They signed Thami Sangweni, Wayne Sandilands and Musa Nyatama and all of them were in the starting line-up against Chippa United on Saturday. They were signed for a reason and I can bet my bottom dollar that the reason was not for them to sit on the bench.

Why else would anyone sign players? To sit on the bench? That makes no sense, does it? Ramahlwe Mphahlele did well last season when he joined from Sundowns, while the likes of William Twala, Joseph Molangoane and Gustavo Paez have not been as consistent since they joined the club.

So it’s clear that the players that they are signing are just not good enough and the club needs to move with the times of having to sign big in the market, if they have intentions of winning titles on a regular basis.

They've signed Bhongolethu Jayiya, Philani Zulu, Dumisani Zuma and Teenage Hadebe and they think they’ve done enough in the market? Not by a long shot and their first two games of the season should be a serious wake up call for them.

The good thing for them is that the market is still open until the final day of August. They need to sign more players or else the supporters are in for another painful season. At this rate, Komphela might not make it to December. - Kick Off
