2018 Elections: 'Zimbabwe Elections Won’t Happen,' Ibbo Mandaza

Harare - Political scientist and Sapes Trust director Ibbo Mandaza postulates there are two reasons why the much-awaited 2018 general elections might not happen.

Mandaza believes there was a chance of President Robert Mugabe being incapacitated due to advanced age or formation of an inclusive government before 2018.

“So I don’t understand this excitement about elections when we should be getting worried,” he said.

Mandaza added that the fact that the country had a 93-year-old president he couldn’t rule out a dire possibility.

His claims are also buttressed by a news article allegedly from Reuters which alleges that Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was in talks with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

The article which has gone viral on social media alleges that Morgan Tsvangirai is in talks with Mnangagwa with the view to form a government of national unity (GNU) and avoid elections next year.

“I don’t see Tsvangirai refusing to have another GNU if he is offered back his former position as prime minister. So I repeat I don’t see an election taking place in 2018, maybe a GNU or we will plunge into some chaos,” he said.

Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka has however refuted the allegations adding that there were no such plans and that MDC-T will not have any role in the GNU that will be proposed outside the impending 2018 elections.

“President Tsvangirai and the party he leads will never be party to any government formed outside of elections. We are a democratic party that values the legitimacy that stems from the people’s involvement through a democratic process of elections.

“As such, President Tsvangirai will never be party to any deal that falls outside the democratic values of legitimacy and elections,” he said.

However, ZBC news reporter Reuben Barwe said Mandaza was actually day-dreaming for thinking that elections will not take place in 2018 as scheduled.

Opposition parties have actually set 2018 general elections as their “this is it” to dislodge President Mugabe who has led the country since 1980. - Online Sources
