Eric Mathoho: “I Let my Teammates, Country Down but will Bounce Back”

Johannesburg - Suspended Bafana Bafana defender Eric Mathoho has vowed to bounce back strongly from what he has called a temporary setback.

This comes after he received his second red card in as many games when Bafana went down 2-1 to Cape Verde in a 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Praia on Friday.

The red card followed closely on his maiden sending off a fortnight ago when Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to SuperSport United in a league game at FNB Stadium.

But the towering defender, who was released from the camp yesterday, has promised to come back stronger and wiser, pledging to atone for his mistakes.
Eric Matoho

“I know I’ve let South Africa down and I am disappointed too. I have to be strong – everyone makes mistakes. I’ve let my teammates and the country down, and I am down too and hurting, but will bounce back,” he said after the game.

He said the two marching orders were the first in his professional career and that he was downcast about the latest turn of events. Although he still believes Friday’s red card was a harsh decision by the Tunisian match official, the modest Mathoho acknowledged it caused a rush of blood to his head.

“I thought the offence warranted just a yellow card but the referee saw it differently because of the pressure from their players and the supporters. But it is part of football, mistakes do happen.”

He also acknowledged he had not been at his best lately and said he hoped to return in better shape.

“You can’t always be at your best, sometimes you go through a lean period. But I promise I will be back – I know I can do better. As a player you must have a big heart and never let disappointments go to your head. It’s now in the past, I will serve my time and come back stronger.”

Mathoho will miss tomorrow’s return clash with Cape Verde at Moses Mabhida Stadium. - Daily Sun
