Johannesburg- A former Kaizer Chiefs player has teamed up with Premier League champions Chelsea and Shield South Africa to give young talents from Soweto the opportunity to compete for the chance of a lifetime.

On 2 September 2017, 85 aspiring soccer enthusiasts from across Johannesburg came together to compete for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to train with Chelsea Football Club.

Five heats have taken place, kicking off in Pretoria and subsequently moving on to Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban and then ending off in the City of Gold.

"Soweto, the hub of soccer talent, brought the heat and was not short on skill. Players lived up to the challenge, demonstrating their passion and commitment to the game as they all fought to secure their spot in the finals.

"The stakes are high as only five players will be selected from each region, to make up the country's top players," Gareth Marshall, senior brand manager of Shield South Africa, explained.

"Finals will commence in late October and will see 25 of the country's best players go head-to-head in a week-long national trial conducted by the Blues coaches themselves.

"There has been a lot of talent across the various regions, it is now up to the Blue coaches to select the player who has the skill required to participate at a professional level."

Former Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana defender Siphiwe Mkhonza led the coaching team that selected the five best players from each region.

"At the finals, players will have to conquer fear as their only opponent. If they can conquer that, then the opportunity is theirs for the taking," Mkhonza, coach of the Shield Sbonis' iDiski competition, explained.

"We have seen some talented young players across the five regions, and I am confident that we will find the best soccer player, both on and off the field."

In addition to the winning player, one lucky superfan will win a Chelsea FC dream trip to watch the Blues' first team train and meet the squad at the club's Cobham Training Centre. - Online Sources
