Johannesburg - 18 September, 2017 marked the first anniversary of the death of Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala.

To honour his life, Mandoza’s widow Mpho launched the Mandoza Foundation at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

The Nkalakatha hitmaker died at the hospital of a brain tumour on his wife’s birthday last year.

Mpho said the foundation was aimed at creating awareness around cancer in townships and would send mobile clinics in locations to test residents for the disease. It was launched in partnership with the Cancer Association of South Africa.

“Through the foundation we are honouring Mandoza. He was a fighter and he was not ashamed, despite the negativity around him,” she said.

“It was not an easy journey. There was a time when people advised us to go see a traditional healer  but I refused. Cancer is for everyone. I want to erase this black mentality that the disease is only for white people.”

Mpho said when her husband found out he had cancer, it was already in stage three.

“I thought about what could have happened if it had been detected earlier. This is why it’s important to have early detection,” she said.

Mpho said during Mandoza’s stay at Charlotte Maxeke, the staff were very supportive. She visited the ward where her husband died and struggled to hold back her tears as she said she wanted to keep Mandoza’s legacy alive.

“I know a little about cancer but I’m going to work with experts who will help me understand the disease better and teach other people about it,” she said.

Radio Jacaranda yesterday donated R50 000 to the foundation, while Theo Nhlengethwa of Boom Shaka motivated patients at the hospital before giving a speech at the launch. - Daily Sun
