Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs need to hire a coach who possess cup pedigree if the club is serious about bringing back the glory days at Naturena.
This is the opinion of former Amakhosi midfielder Jabulani Mendu who was the part of Chiefs team that lifted the league title in 2004/05.“Allow me to express myself freely. I’m not fighting anyone here, but I’m just expressing my humble opinion. We are talking about the brand that wins trophies every season. Every season Chiefs win titles.
“Look he is my senior (referring to coach Steve Komphela). But I think a winning brand has to associated with another winning brand," Mendu explained
"I’m not saying Steve is not a winner but I’m saying right now Chiefs need someone who knows how to win. You don’t build at Chiefs. You don’t play and hope that next year it is going to be better. You win things at Chiefs.”
Komphela is yet to lift a trophy in his coaching career. He started at Manning Rangers in 2002. In 2004 he reached the final of the ABSA Cup with Rangers. He went on to lose to Moroka Swallows by 3-1.
Komphela failed to deliver silverware at all his other clubs - Dynamos, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars and Platinum Stars.
This is his third season with Amakhosi and he is still searching for his first piece of silverware. He started his tenure well as he reached two cup finals in his first season. But he lost to Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN 8 and Telkom Knockout respectively.
“Sundowns are better than Chiefs in so many ways at the moment," Mendu said of the club he also played for "They have good players, they have achieved a lot better than Chiefs in the last few seasons and they are still going to achieve more.
"It's not that Chiefs have bad players. They're just still finding their feet. But they need a coach who will make them win trophies. I’m sad to see Chiefs suffering because they are a big team in Africa,” Mendu lamented. - Independent
