Johannesburg - Winners never quit and quitters never win.
So said a philosophical Steve Komphela when drawn on whether he was thinking of quitting his Kaizer Chiefs job amid growing frustration and pressure from the fans.
The under-fire coach will get a reprieve this weekend as he guides Amakhosi in a less-demanding Macufe Cup final against Bloemfontein Celtic at Free State Stadium on Sunday.
But in light of the team’s inconsistent run, capped by a shock 2-1 league loss to Baroka last week, there are fresh questions over his future.
“I’m looking at this more as the project. The excitement of the challenge is that you want to break through,” said Komphela.

“You don’t hover and say, ‘Phew, I’m not breaking even’. Maybe I have a different perspective to life. Maybe I’m wired differently, which is why I’m still in this position.”
Komphela insisted he still viewed the annual match against Celtic as more than just a friendly kick-about.
“There are no friendlies at Chiefs. As much as we have our own objectives of integrating our teams with this match, we still have to go there, give a good performance and get a result so that we can get confidence going forward.
“You cannot imagine going to Bloem and not getting a result, even though you are working on integration.”
Though he has the bulk of the fringe players involved in the reserve league this weekend, Komphela is looking to throw in several youngsters into the deep end.
The likes of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Siyabonga Ngezane could be entrusted with the responsibility of defending their Macufe title.
“We have a bit of luxury to introduce the younger players as well as give opportunities to our seniors so they can get into the groove,” Komphela added. - Daily Sun
