End of an Era: 'Robert Mugabe Finally Steps Down'

Harare – It might have come as a nightmare to some – but the man who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 uninterrupted years – Robert Gabriel Mugabe is finally gone – sadly, after a show of brute force by the military.

His sudden relinquishing of power comes after army intervention in the once prosperous southern African state, which has become a basket case – and it came at a price for the nation.

The economy had plummeted to it lowest ebb – unemployment has become the daily norm – while multitudes have relocated beyond their borders.

Before his sudden – and rather forced retirement – Mugabe had fired his former deputy – Emmerson Mnangagwa – a darling of the state security appratus.

Mnangagwa’s mistake was, according to the president: insubordination and being too ambitious – a charge that saw his processor - Joice Mujuru being dismissed in similar fashion.

In a video viral on social networks, Christopher Mutsvangwa confirmed the developments, sending the whole country into a rare episode of elation.

It is reported Mugabe demanded safety for his family and a safe passage out of the country as his only conditions.

"I am reliably informed that a deal is being finalized. It appears Mugabe’s demands for safe passage for his family have been granted. Final details might be confirmed in a few hours," tweeted media owner, Trevor Ncube.

During the silent coup, the military said, “Firstly, we wish to assure the nation that His Excellency, The President, of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Head of State and Government and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde R.G Mugabe and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.”

They further said they were targeting criminals, mainly from the G40 faction – led by Mugabe’s wife – Grace.

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice. As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy.
