Amakhosi Gamble: Is Leonardo Castro the 'Missing Link'

Johannesburg - The excitement with which the Kaizer Chiefs fans greeted news of Leonardo Castro's imminent arrival seemed to smack of desperation.

And if the recent history of transfers is anything to go, Castro may not really be the "messiah" mostly frustrated Amakhosi fans are hoping for, seeing as their team continue to underachieve.

“Chiefs and Sundowns have finalised the agreement and Castro will join Chiefs in January,” the club announced in a terse statement.

The 28-year-old Colombian follows in the footsteps of Jose Torrealba, a fellow South American, who made the switch, via Venezuela’s Deportivo Tachira, nine years ago.

But challenges facing Chiefs upfront suggest Castro may not be the automatic solution to the goal-scoring malaise currently afflicting Steve Komphela's team.
Leornado Castro has Signed for Amakhosi

Castro enjoyed massive success with the Brazilians, bagging no fewer than three major trophies since he joined three seasons ago.

But it is worth noting the nippy forward hasn't been the striker he was since famous "CBD" made up of Castro himself and the mercurial duo, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly, was dismantled.

In fact, Castro has only made three appearances this season, two in the league once in the league, playing a total of minutes 92, without a scoring goal.

Interestingly, he last scored a league goal against Chiefs on 30 April 2016, before injury stymied his superb run.

His last appearance came against AmaZulu three months, but he last netted for Sundowns in their Nedbank Cup fixture against fourth-tier league side, Mariveni, in March.

Torrealba was no great shakes either, producing four goals from 35 matches in his three-year stint.

And what about Katlego Mphela, Bafana Bafana’s once prime striker, who collected a six-month paycheque before being jettisoned for disciplinary, reason two seasons ago?

Castro is joining another Venezuela compatriot in Gustavo Paez at Amakhosi and his arrival will doubtless bring hope. But it may be not the irrepressible star striker who sizzled at Sundowns. - Daily Sun
