Lazarus Dokora: Education Minister ‘Fired’ within 48 Hours

Harare – Former education minister, Lazarus Dokora has been dismissed from cabinet – less than 48 hours after his appointment to the latest cabinet setup.

Dokora’s dismissal will come as the shortest stint by a serving minister and a relief to some parents and scholars who were often irked by his seemingly controversial maneuvers.

He was replaced by Professor Paul Mavima.

His exploits within Mugabe’s cabinet had been dominated by controversial decisions – among them was the national declaration in schools.

Facing the same fate was the newly-installed labour Professor Clever Nyathi.

“...the following adjustments have been made to ensure compliance with the Constitution and considerations of gender, demography and special needs
Dr Lazarus Dokora

On Thursday, 30 November, the incoming Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa released his much-anticipated cabinet.

His pronouncement was received with varied spirits – with some sections arguing it was a replication of the previous regime.

However, some felt it was a matter of leadership deficiency during the preceding administration – and it could be amended in the new dispensation under Mnangagwa.

Media practitioner, Columbus Mavhunga said the removal of Dokora was meant to satisfy constitutional dictates.

“President Mnangagwa moves in to comply with the constitution. I can safely say: I was one of the first #Zimbabwe’s journalists to pick HE’s misstep! (Beating my own drum),” Mavhunga wrote on twitter.

Mavhunga’s observation was seconded by former inclusive government Vice President, Professor Arthur Mutambara.

“Just a word of caution: The Cabinet adjustments this morning have nothing to do with outcry about the quality of ministers. The adjustments are meant to address the illegality of the Cabinet. Dokora frees a non-constituent slot, while Nyati & Mutsvangwa are no longer ministers.”

Jealous Mawarire said: “I hear Matemadanda & Togarepi were fired from their ministerial appointments less than 48 hrs after appointment. I said there is something clumsy about the cabinet appointments & the reversals. Interestingly, some pple still think the changes are a mark of genius.”

The new misters will be sworn in on 4 December.
