Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has explained why experienced attacker Siphiwe Tshabalala is being deployed differently this season.

'Shabba' impressed as a number 10 last term as he scored eight goals and provided three assists in all competitions.

Komphela has since adjusted tactics following an injury crisis at Naturena, with Tshabalala continuing to add value as a second striker with four goals and three assists to date.

"The guy is a winner," Komphela said of Tshabalala, who netted a late winner against Platinum Stars after stepping off the bench at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

"Last season he was playing at 10, great stuff, supplied a lot and scored lot. This time... because how we set up and we should not be quick to forget that we are still sitting with a lot of injuries. We don’t have anything at the back, we thin, about six you would say.
Shabba New role Explained

"Maybe because we managed to resist and keep building and building we forget why we ended up setting up like this. We are setting up with 'Tight' [Joseph Molangoane] and [Philani] Zulu as wingbacks and we are sitting with three centre-backs.

And now Shabba in that set up can only play as a second striker. Because in a 3-4-3 if you plant him wide that means you have to compromise Zulu or Molangoane and you wouldn’t do that.

"Now in a 3-4-3 you can still play Shabba behind the two strikers but the challenge is when the fullbacks of the opponents start coming at you. When you spread it then he goes wide. So that is the way we use him and it's amazing how he covers space, very experienced."

Third-placed Amakhosi will play their final game of the year against struggling Ajax Cape Town at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (20h15). - KickOff
