Harare – The ruling party has appointed a committee to deal with the country’s biggest nemesis – price hikes – affecting the majority of citizens, ahead of the 2018 elections.

Unprecedented price increases, alongside the three tier pricing system has caused untold suffering to many Zimbabweans, as retailers adjust cost of goods regularly.

Citizens had petitioned the president to address the recurrent problem, with some sections marking them as economic saboteurs.

“Government notes with concern the existence of a multi-tier pricing system and this cannot go unabated,” President Emmerson Mnangagwa said recently.

Addressing the media after a party politburo meeting in Harare, Information Secretary Simon Khaya-Moyo, said a committee that will be led by Retired General Constantino Chiwenga has since been established to look into the issue of price increases and the three tier pricing system.

“Politburo discussed the issue of rampant price increases in the country and has identified various strategies to curtail this phenomenon. During the discussion, President Mnangagwa, warned economic saboteurs that their days are numbered. The party is aware of those that want to cause confusion and inflict economic pain on our people,” said Khaya Moyo.

The party is understood to have blamed speculation, aided by misleading social media reports, as a contributory factor to the pricing madness. He called for continued efforts to increase production, attract new investment and acquire new machinery for the productive sectors of the economy.

The move by Zanu-PF was a response to the president’s call regarding price distortions.

“We need to examine our modus operandi as captains of industry and commerce if we are ever going to move forward. There are some dealers, suppliers and business owners who are in the habit of increasing prices willy-nilly without proper justification, let me hasten to say my Government says no to such counter-economic practices.”

However, economic experts have warned against price controls that may be detrimental to the already comatose economy, facing a recurrent cash crunch forcing some to sale money for profit.
