Johannesburg - Civil rights watchdog AfriForum will seek justice in two high profile cases featuring former Zimbabwe's first lady, Grace Mugabe and EFF leader, Julius Malema.

The group said the North Gauteng High Court will next month hear a case against the granting of diplomatic immunity to Zimbabwe’s ex First Lady Grace Mugabe by the South African government.

Grace Mugabe is set to appear before the court for diplomatic immunity between 10-11 May for assaulting Gabriela Engels.

Engels‚ who was allegedly struck with an electrical extension cord‚ laid assault charges against her. AfriForum‚ which is assisting Engels in the case‚ said they believe they had a strong case to challenge the immunity.

After attempting to get justice Grace was granted diplomatic immunity by the South African government’s Department of International Relations and Co-operation. AfriForum is set to go for private prosecution if the State refuses to prosecute her, if she loses the immunity case.

Meanwhile, Afriforum will seek to a private prosecution on EFF leader, Julius Malema for corruption charges.

"Nobody is above the law. Even if Mr Malema thinks he is above the law‚ he is not. We will make sure that he is held accountable. If the NPA doesn't do their job‚ then we have to intervene in these matters," said AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel.

However, EFF remains defiant.

“It is not a secret that the EFF is at the forefront of the struggle for land expropriation without compensation and that AfriForum is one of its right-wing opponents‚” a statement by acting spokesperson Tebogo Mokwele read.

“Instead of engaging in a democratic debate and engagement on the land question‚ AfriForum does what their colonial and apartheid forefathers did to Freedom Fighters‚ which is criminal persecution and prosecutions for political reasons.” - Online Sources
