Professor Moyo: Fire Army Will not Hand Over Power to Chamisa Minister

Harare - Exiled former Zimbabwean spin doctor, Professor Jonathan Moyo has urged the government to immediately dismiss misfiring deputy finance minister Terrence Mukupe for his utterances that the army will not hand over power to any opposition winner.

His sentiments were aimed at MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa, in the event that he wins the much-awaited 2018 general elections.

"If that is the government's view, a serious and truthful one, then Mukupe must be fired pronto. If he is not fired, the public and international community must take Mukupe's rant as the truth," Professor Moyo tweeted.
Professor Jonathan Moyo

Moyo is a Zimbabwean politician who served in the government of Zimbabwe as Minister of Higher Education from 2015 to 2017. He was previously Minister of Information and Publicity from 2000 to 2005 and again from 2013 to 2015.

“How can we say, honestly, the soldiers took the country, practically snatched it from Mugabe, to come and hand it over to Chamisa? A child talking about spaghetti roads, who is talking about impregnating all women?

“This country, where it is now and where it is coming from, needs a grown up, a steady hand, a person who can stabilise things,” said Mukupe during a rally.

Mukupe said he also has presidential ambitions.

“Look at me, I also want to be a President, there is no one who does not want to seat in the (Mercedes) Benz while sirens are sounding all the way, but everything has its time,” he said.

“I don’t think that I am mature enough to be given the country to run and all the soldiers in this country salute me saying ‘the commander in chief is here’.
“But I heard Chamisa, at another rally, saying in the morning he wakes up and practices how to inspect a guard of honour.”

Government issued a statement blasting Mukupe’s statements as unlawful and reckless. Previously, the army has said it will not salute a presidential winner without war credentials.

“The statements by the civilian beneficiary of military rule are most unfortunate and should be withdrawn with immediate effect.

“This is clearly why we have been calling on the military element to withdraw the statements made by the late General Zvinavashe, Mukupe is just repeating the statements by that command, he is a pawn in the scheme of things,” the MDC Alliance retorted.
