Final Three: Former Chelsea Coach Avram Grant on Chiefs Radar

Johannesburg - Former Chelsea coach Avram Grant has become a more likely candidate for the next Kaizer Chiefs coaching job to replace Steve Komphela.

Amakhosi have no narrowed their search for a new head coach down to three candidates, with Stuart Baxter, Doctor Khumalo and Mick McCarthy have all been linked with the Amakhosi in recent weeks.

However, there is also a possibility that the club has widened its search elsewhere as they seek to bring their three-season drought to an end.

The Glamour Boys have played their cards very close to their chest since the exit of Steve Komphela towards the end of the 2017/18 season, with several names being thrown into the hat as potential successors to the South African.

Bobby Motaung recently confirmed in the media that they have received around 20 different CVs regards to the vacant position at Naturena, although throughout the process the whole club has been very cautious about naming any names.

While Grant is thought to be one of those who has made it into the final three in terms of potential candidates, the other two – at this point – remain unknown.

Grant is an Israeli football manager who currently serves as Manager for Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC. Grant has spent the majority of his career coaching and managing in Israel, winning a number of national league and cup victories with different teams, and also managing the Israeli national team for four years.

Grant moved to England in 2006 to become Technical Director of Portsmouth before being appointed Director of football at Chelsea in July 2007. Two months later, in September 2007, following the departure of José Mourinho, Grant was appointed manager of Chelsea.

Despite steering the team into the Champions League final, the League Cup final and contesting the Premier League title to the last day, his contract was terminated at the end of the season.

Given the fact that the candidates have now been whittled down, it is thought that Chiefs could well make a final decision in the next few weeks in order to make sure that Komphela’s replacement has as much time as possible to plan for the 2018/19 campaign.
