Johannesburg - Lucas Radebe says Steve Komphela is not entirely to blame for the club's recent shortcomings.
“The blame was not entirely on coach Komphela because I believe the players have to take responsibility as well," Radebe said.
“But the quality, not to disrespect their players, you need quality that can compete at home and on the bigger stage like Mamelodi Sundowns did in Africa.
“They have won the Champions League which is absolutely brilliant and that highlights the players they have like Percy Tau, which are doing well and it is a great opportunity for them,” concluded the 49-year-old.
Komphela quit as Chiefs coach in April after a Nedbank Cup semi-final loss to Free State Stars condemned Amakhosi to a third straight season without silverware under his watch and precipitated a fan riot at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Radebe, who skippered Bafana Bafana and Leeds United with distinction, has questioned the aptitude of the personnel at Komphela's disposal at Naturena.
He feels Pitso Mosimane's Mamelodi Sundowns squad have the requisite quality to not only shine locally but also compete on the bigger stage, as evidenced by their Absa Premiership triumph and CAF Champions League exploits in recent years.
