Harare – Once upon a while during Robert Mugabe’s lengthy reign – the disposed leader titled his cabinet: a war cabinet. Among the dislodged group were career politicians – those who slept in parliament – but would keep their positions anyway.
Now enter Emmerson Mnangagwa – the leader of the new dispensation has done the unthinkable – dispossessing the old guard and replacing them with new blood.Derick Matsengarwodzi
One positive move was the appointment of Oppah Muchinguri to head the defence ministry – taking over from Constantino Chiwenga – a first in Zimbabwe’s history. Since independence the ministry has been allocated to men loyal to the party.
Former Olympic medalist Kirsty Coventry will occupy the sports department – and many are hoping she will bring her global experience to prop the sporting fraternity facing surmounting snags.

Obadiah Moyo – a former hospital manager has replaced the long-serving David Parirenyatwa in the health ministry.
Renowned economist Professor Mthuli Ncube will occupy the finance ministry – historically occupied by lawyers – the last being Patrick Chinamasa.
The public service portfolio will be run by Sekesai Nzenza while Joel Biggie Matiza – a qualified architect will lead the transport and infrastructural ministry.
“The salient feature of this Cabinet is that it is an intergenerational mix where the majority are young and technocratic brains that have been blended with experienced and competent seniors,” said Tafadzwa Mugwadi.
Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) president Sifelani Jabangwe has commnende the new cabinet.
“We believe Patrick Chinamasa (former Finance Minister) did good work but to take us to the next level, vision 2030, Prof Ncube is probably the right man,” Jabangwe said.
Even the opposition has given the new team thumbs up.
“If you look at the new Finance Minister, he has always been a brilliant academic, always top of his class. If we look again at Kirsty Coventry, our history making Olympian, she is young, warm and inspiring,” mentioned Obert Gutu.
Law expert Dr Alex Magaisa is optimistic with the new lineup.
“The Cabinet is noticeably free of the majority of the old boys who have dominated government for decades. The more familiar names from the Mugabe era are gone.
“This includes Obert Mpofu, Patrick Chinamasa, Simon Khaya Moyo, Josaya Hungwe and David Parirenyatwa who have all been dropped. The likes of Simbarashe Mubengegwi and Chris Mutsvangwa who were Special Advisers after the coup are also not on the list.”
