Harare – Influential people have called for the late Oliver Mtukudzi to bestowed the highest honour.

Some sections are clamouring for a national hero status  though the shrine has been monopolised by the ruling party.

“He was a legend. He is not only a music hero for the country. He is a hero of Africa. He deserves a special honour, but things will become clear in the next days.

“He was indeed a legend. As Government, we are prepared to honour our legends in various sectors. He was a legend. He is not only a music hero for the country.

“He is a hero of Africa. He deserves a special honour, but things will become clear in the next days,” said Sport and Arts Minister Kirsty Coventry.

The business community has also added its voice.

“A true African hero & a big tree has fallen Burying him at the national shrine would limit his status & contribution to humanity. Not burying him there makes the shrine meaningless,” said businessman Shingi Munyeza.

The calls could fall on deaf ears, after Cde Chinx born Dick Chingaira known ruling party supporter failed to make the grade, which is deliberated by the party's executive.

Mtukudzi died on Wednesday afternoon at the Avenues Clinic in Harare where he had been admitted in the intensive care unit. He was 66.
