Johannesburg - Nolubabalo “Babsie” Nobanda has finally returned home after serving eight years in a Thai jail.

Nolubabalo was arrested with cocaine in her dreadlocks at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in December 2011.

She was sentenced to 30 years in prison, which was halved to a 15-year sentence and reduced by two and a half years in May.

She initially told the authorities in Thailand that she was hired to deliver the drugs to a customer at a hotel in Bangkok.

Emotions were high as the family waited to be reunited with their loved one. Nolubabalo, now 31, was greeted by family members from the Eastern Cape at the OR Tambo International Airport today.

She told the media she grew stronger and learned her lesson. “It is good to be back home. I want to thank all South Africans for all the support they have given me,” said Nolubabalo.

“It hasn’t been easy and my people have been behind me to ensure I see them again. All I want to do from now is spend some time with family and catch up.”

While she was arrested, Nolubabalo obtained a degree in communication via Unisa through long-distance learning. Her sister Mila Ncepu (18) told Daily Sun: “I was 10 years old when my sister was arrested. The past few days were very chaotic as we looked forward to meeting her again.”

Mila said communicating with her sister by letter was emotionally draining as they could not see each other. Nolubabalo’s mum Honjiswa said she was happy her yearning to see her daughter would now stop.

“She has been away from us for too long. The missing puzzle in our family has finally returned home,” she said. Family lawyer advocate Matthew Mphahlwa told Daily Sun he was happy to have played a significant role in Nolubabalo’s release.

“She was hailed for teaching her fellow inmates English and her good behaviour was also essential,” he said. “Today marks the closure of a painful chapter for the family; which they endured for years without their daughter, he added. - Daily Sun
