#BringBackDrPeter: Prayer Vigil for Missing Doctor

Harare - Doctors and other concerned citizens are gathered at Parirenyatwa Hospital to hold a prayer vigil for the abducted President of the Doctor’s Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi.

The interdenominational service was organised by doctors for the doctor, missing since Saturday after being allegedly abducted by State security agents.

Since August this year over 20 Zimbabweans have been abducted, tortured and beaten, yet none have been brought to book as the government blames a third force.

However, this blame game has come under immense public scrutiny, since no credible evidence has not been brought to book, neither have they managed to single out any suspects.

Dr Magombeyi after he sent a message to say he had been abducted by unknown persons, for organising an industrial action, demanding a living wage. Zimbabwe doctors earn a miserly equivalent of about R3 000 are on strike to press for better wages, equipment and medicines in state hospitals.

The ZHDA has reportedly accused state security forces of abducting the doctor because of his role in organising work stoppages. This week some doctors said the death of deposed Robert Mugabe, 95, in a Singapore hospital on 6 September was an indication of how bad health services in Zimbabwe were.

Commenting on the disappearance of Magombeyi on Twitter opposition MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said, "It breaks my heart knowing that the family of Dr Peter Magombeyi is terrified of what is happening to their loved one.

"Dr Magombeyi’s crime is only to ask for a living wage for his profession. This is a reflection of the troubles born out of refusal to implement Political Reforms."

No official comment has been dispatched from the government, while the police have said they are investigating.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a report received from an informant that the Acting President of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), Dr Peter Magombeyi, was last night abducted by three armed unidentified men in Budiriro, Harare,” a police spokesperson aid.
