Harare - The death of ousted Robert Mugabe in a Singapore hospital has caused an avalanche of mixed reactions.
Widely believed to have orchestrated the mass suffering of Zimbabweans, especially during the final days of his four decade rule.
Under Mugabe's watch, Harare morphed into a basket case, the economy was on a free fall, while he sidelined his opponents with an iron fist, particularly during the Gukuhurahundi era, that saw almost 20 000 Ndebele's annihilated, during the ethnic cleansing.
For a greater part of his rule, Mugabe flew out of the country to receive top-class medical attention, while millions on his nation endured hospitals lacking basic medications, such as painkillers, leading to many deaths.
Announcing his passing, President Mnangagwa said, "Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.
"His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace"he tweeted.
The tweed caused an out pour of responses.
"In all this he later put Zimbabweans in Hardship, the cause of migration to other countries. He destroyed the economy and the countries wealth and beauty. He sent his people into eternal damnation and poverty. He failed his people.He failed the country and generations to come," another contributor said.

Another one said, "The butcher of Matabeleland, gone too late, may his lieutenants follow. That includes you Mnangagwa."
"I am a human being. I am a Christian. I am African. Brought up in the wafawanaka philosophy. I sincerely wish to feel sadness for the goblin Robert Mugabe’s death. I sincerely wish I could say I am sad. I am fighting hard not to say good riddance for he is someone’s loved one," commented another one.

In 2016 Mugabe threatened to have me killed. This was my response: “There are many things you have the power to do to us Mr President, but there are two things you have no power to stop. You cannot stop your sun from setting & you cannot stop mine from rising. Your sun has set Robert. Goodbye."
Respected journalist, Lance Guma was unapologetic.
"Having spent over 20 years as a journalist covering the atrocities committed by Robert Mugabe’s regime I cannot insult the memory of his victims by trying to be nice because he has died. This was a vile man who had his perceived opponents abducted, raped, tortured and murdered."
Opposition activist Tendai Biti has added his voice in mourning Mugabe. "I was tortured by Robert Mugabe in 2008. Many Zimbabweans were killed during Gukurahundi. But I don’t feel bitterness, I feel indebtedness, I feel gratitude to the work he did in liberating our country."
Nelson Chamisa has also mourned the former premier.
"My condolences to the Mugabe family and Africa for the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding President.This is a dark moment for the family because a giant among them has fallen. May the Lord comfort them.
"There’s so much to say for a life of 95 years and national leadership spanning over 37 years but in the true spirit of Ubuntu, we would like to give this moment to mourning but there will be time for greater reflection."
Meanwhile, Mnangagwa has returned home from a World Economic Forum in Africa in Cape Town to attend to the death of his former mentor.
