Marvelous Nakamba: Aston Villa Condemns ‘Disgusting’ Racist Chants

Birmingham – Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has been dragged into a racism storm after a section of the club’s fans were caught on video singing a song with racist lyrics about the Zimbabwe international.

A small group of fans were filmed singing the offensive song after Aston Villa’s thumping 5-1 victory away to Norwich City on Saturday, in which Nakamba played the full 90 minutes.

Aston Villa condemned the chants on Monday and said it would involve the police. The chant’s lyrics went: “Marvelous Nakamba / His dad’s a rasta / McGinn’s his master / His cock’s fucking massive”.

McGinn is John McGinn, the white Scottish midfielder who also plays for Aston Villa. Aston Villa legend Stan Collymore took to Twitter on Sunday to condemn the fans after the video was posted on social media.

Collymore tweeted: “‘Marvellous Nakamba, McGinn’s his master, his dad’s a rasta’. This is racism. Nothing more, nothing less. Over to @AVFCOfficial.”

An Aston Villa statement on Monday said the club was “disgusted and appalled.”

“The club wholly condemns the chant and urges other supporters to help us identify those responsible. Chants of this nature besmirch the good name of Aston Villa Football Club and our fans.

“If the perpetrators are identified they will be dealt with in the strongest manner by the club and be reported to the police immediately,” the club said.

It added: “Our security staff will be vigilant at forthcoming games to ensure that anybody attempting repetition of this chant will be dealt with severely.

“We know we can rely on the assistance of the majority of our fans to eradicate this toxic behaviour immediately.”

Hwange-born Nakamba joined Villa from Belgian club Club Brugge in July, and has quickly become a fan-favourite with his polished performances and likeable character.
