Big Nuz member Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo has died after he suffered a minor stroke earlier this week.

The 40-year-old was hospitalised a week after he returned from a performance with Big Nuz. On Thursday, Afrotainment issued a statement confirming the news of him being hospitalied.

He was admitted at the Durdoc Hospital in Durban. A source close to Mampintsha’s wife, Bongekile Simelane, popularly known as Babes Wodumo, confirmed the news of his passing.

Mampintsha was a producer and musician, who was a member of the Big Nuz band made up of Mzi “Danger” Tshomela and the late Sbusiso “R Mashesha” Khoma. He founded the well-known kwaito group in 2002.

He was well-known for his hit songs such as Joburg and Ngeke. Together with the group, they released seven albums. The group recently made a come-back and had plans to name their new album after the late group member, R Mashesha.

The Southern African Music Rights Organisation confirmed the musician's death on Twitter.

In a statement released by music label Afrotainment Thursday, Mampintsha – real name Mandla Maphumulo – was hospitalised after suffering a stroke following a performance with Big Nuz.

"He is currently in hospital receiving medical attention and is under doctor's observation," the statement said. "The family asks that the public and media respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Mampitsha was married to Babes Wodumo. The couple welcomed their first child in July 2021 and had been working on their marriage, as seen on their reality show, Uthando Lodumo.

The second season was released in September.

The first season of the couple's reality show gave viewers a front-row seat into the couple's lobola negotiations, their star-studded wedding celebration, and the anticipation of the birth of their first child, affectionately known as "Sponge".

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the province won't be the same without Big Nuz's Mampintsha.

Dube-Ncube has sent her condolences to friends and family of the music star. She says this is a big loss to the province and its entertainment industry.
