A Mashasha family spokesperson has clarified that Grant only spent four days hiding in the ceiling, and not more than a decade, as had been widely reported.

Nobuhle Mashasha told a local publication, H-Metro that Grant had hidden in fear that someone was after his life as had been advised by his mother.

“We managed to meet and talk to Grant upon our arrival from Gwanda. From how he looked on the day he was retrieved from the ceiling, Grant has changed completely, showing a healthy, handsome face,” said Nobuhle, his niece.

Unlike the social media reports that he was holed in the ceiling for decades, Grant was actually forced to go there by her mother, who lied that he was under threat, from unknown people.
'The Ceiling Man': Why & How Grant Hid in the Ceiling
“He feels stressed to quickly open up about how he came to be kept indoors for 10 years. He told us that he had been living in a room and slept on a sofa for 10 years, not 14, as reported,” the cousin added. “He spent four days in the ceiling, frightened by his mother’s threats that there were people after his life.”

But despite earning his freedom, Grant seems is still scared to interact with other people. “He is beginning to understand that there is no one after his life and is now interacting with others,” the cousin clarified. “He is still scared of answering some questions thinking that someone might still be targeting his life.”

Grant was found hiding in the ceiling of his parents’ house when the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s homicide section went to their house to investigate his mother for staying with the decomposing body of her husband.

When he was found, he looked like a homeless man but soon made headlines as women scrambled for him when they discovered his handsomeness after he tidied up.
