The late former President, Robert Mugabe’s daughter, Bona is divorcing her husband of nine years Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore.

The reason for divorce is that their marriage has irretrievably broken down with no prospect of restoration.

Bona Nyapudzai Ouma Mugabe filed the papers at the High Court today seeking an order for a decree of divorce. Bona and Simba married in 2014 at a glamorous ceremony attended by the political and business elite in Harare and outside the country.

According to the court papers, the parties have lost all love and affection for each other and have been living apart for a period in excess of nine months. The couple has three children aged seven, five and two. Bona is claiming custody of the children arguing:

“It is in the best interests of the minor children that the Plaintiff is given full custody of the children with the Defendant being granted access to them every alternating weekend from Saturday between 8am to Sunday 5pm agreed in advance at agreed places.”

In the case filed under HC 1521/2023, Bona argued: In the event of the granting of the Divorce Decree by the honourable court it will be just and equitable that the Defendant be ordered to pay maintenance for the minor children in the sum of USD2,700.00 per child monthly, until attaining of majority status or they become self-sustaining whichever occurs first.”

Bona said during the subsistence of the marriage, the parties both jointly as well as severally acquired various movable and immovable property. However, she argued that dealing with proprietary issues in the suit will delay the granting of the divorce decree.

Simbarashe and Bona wedded in a lavish ceremony at the family’s private home in plush Borrowdale in 2014 with three head of states from the region among the top guests.

Bona was born on 18 April, 1988) and is the only daughter of former and late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Grace Mugabe, who also have two sons (Chatunga and Robert Jr.). She shares a name with Robert Mugabe's mother.

She attended Dominican Convent Primary School. She also attended the Dominican Convent High School in Harare, Zimbabwe. In 2008, Bona Mugabe was deported from Australia while studying there along with seven other children of senior members of the Mugabe regime.

The Australian government said that they did not want the children of those responsible for human rights abuses in Zimbabwe to get an education unavailable to the ordinary Zimbabwean citizen.

In 2014 Bona Mugabe married Simba Chikore, subsequently appointed as chief operating officer at Air Zimbabwe. The marriage took place at her father Robert Mugabe's private residence in Harare and cost US$4.49 million.

In April 2016, the couple had their first child, a son named Simbanashe Chikore, in a hospital in Singapore. He is also the first grandson of Robert Mugabe.

Chikore resigned from Air Zimbabwe after the 2017 coup d'état. According to the Zimbabwe Independent, Bona Mugabe, her husband, and their son had left the country for Malaysia in the aftermath of her father's resignation, and that she was expecting her second child.

On June 7, 2018, Zimbabwe police arrested Chikore on charges of kidnapping after it was reported that he locked Air Zimbabwe lawyer Bertha Zakeyo in her office after accusing her of selling confidential information about the airline to labor groups.

He has been accused of purging staff and covering up information surrounding a plane which had delivered from Malaysia and which also was grounded due to maintenance problems.

Police spokeswoman Charity Charimba afterwards stated that Chikore was not released from custody. In June 2021, Harare magistrate threw out charges against Simba Chikore, meaning he had been cleared of wrongdoing by the courts. - Online Sources
