Thanks to a bit of corporate reshuffling, Sundar Pichai has nabbed the top job at the world's biggest search engine. But who is he
From humble beginnings in Chennai, Sundar Pichai has just become the CEO of Google. His appointment comes after co-founder Larry Page stepped up to run newly-created parent company Alphabet.Pichai had previously been in charge of running the department responsible for Google's Android mobile operating system. He has previously helped build the company's web browser, Chrome.
Not bad for a man who's family didn't own a telephone until he was 12 years old. He grew up sleeping on the living room floor of a two-bedroom apartment but would discuss technology with his father who worked for a British electrical company.
Now 43, Pichai studied Metallurgical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology and was offered a scholarship to Stanford after graduation.
He joined Google in 2004 and rose through the ranks. He also runs Google's annual I/O developer event - where he often gives keynote speeches on the latest updates.
"Sundar has been saying the things I would have said (and sometimes better!) for quite some time now, and I’ve been tremendously enjoying our work together," wrote Larry Page in a blog post revealing the new structure.
"I know Sundar will always be focused on innovation - continuing to stretch boundaries," Page wrote.
Pichai is described as being intelligent and soft-spoken and is well liked within Google. Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India and Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google are among those who have congratulated Pichai.
Other tech CEOs have also offered their congratulations, including Apple boss Tim Cook and the Indian-born CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella.
Pichai will continue to expand Google's core internet products such as search, maps, advertising and managing the expansion of YouTube. African Leadership Magazine
