Fake Faith And Traditional Healers Cause Mayhem

HARARE – Rampant economic downturn has catapulted a stream of crooked faith healers threatening to run the trade into extinction leading traditional healing bodies in Zimbabwe to closely monitor the trade.

Their monitoring operation seeks to uproot bogus operators who have tarnished the image of the practitioners, with some facing rape charges and theft in order to survive.

“All these fake healers should know that that their days are numbered as we cannot sit back and watch them running the trade,” mentioned a traditional healer director to the Sunday Mail recently.

Zimbabwe has witnessed an avalanche of fake traditional healers – some even advertise their trade in national newspapers, a practice once regarded as a taboo. Many are rumoured to originate from western Africa use dubious titles and operate secretly to evade authorities.

However, even though the majority of people prophesy to be Christians, many clandestinely attend healing sessions with traditional healers (witch doctors). The regulatory body has also cautioned those operating without licences to cease practising forthwith.

“People should only consult healers who have valid certificates from recognisable organisations. It is true that our trade has been invaded by fake healers. …we are doing everything to bring culprits to book.”

Of late, sex crimes involving bogus healers have made sad reading, with one heavily pregnant woman recently molested by a sect faith healer after seeking assistance.

The officially recognised Traditional Medical Practitioners Council has over 3 400 members on its register. Since 2010, the organisation has deregistered over 40 members for improper conduct. Operating without a certificate is a criminal offence, according to the association.

Speaking to the Sunday publication, he added, “We are witnessing many young people masquerading as faith healers operating without licences ad we know that they are only doing this for the sake of money.”
